​SciCommPh a member of World Federation of Science Journalists

The Science Communicators Philippines (SciCommPh) Inc. is now a member of the World Federation of Science Journalists (WESJ).

The WFSJ accepted SciCommPh’s membership application in March 2023 and included SciCommPh in its roster of 71 national science and technology (S&T), environment, health and medical journalists organizations from all over the world.  ​
The WFSJ is a community of professionals dedicated to the improvement of the science journalism field.
WFSJ welcomes members from all over the world to have both positive and productive dialogue on all aspects of science journalism, including but not limited to research advancements, challenges, opportunities, and trends. 
The benefits organizations and their members get from WFSJ are the following:
* Access to trainings, webinars, information sessions
* Connection and collaboration with members the world over to exchange ideas and information
* Access to International Press Cards for associations in good standing
* Member-Only resources, events, and seminars

WFSJ Full Members are entitled to attend, discuss, and vote at the Annual General Assembly, while Associate Members are entitled to attend and discuss but do not have the right to vote. Meanwhile, Honorary Members are organizations and individuals that have rendered exemplary voluntary service or financial contribution in support of the WFSJ’s objectives. Honorary Members are not required to pay annual dues.

The now-defunct Philippine Science Journalists Association (PSciJourn) Inc. was active in participating in WFSJ activities.

Then-PSciJourn President Angelo Palmones has attended one of WFSJ’s World Conference of Science Journalists (WCSJ) that became the seed that grew into PSciJourn’s becoming a member of WFSJ.

PSciJourn Secretary and later- President Lyn Resurreccion was among those who qualified as mentors in the two-year (2013 and 2014) WFSJ’s Science Journalists Cooperation project (SjCOOP)-Asia that aimed to advance science journalism in the region by training journalists.

SciCommPh member Shaira Panela was the program’s mentee from the Philippines. 

Ms. Resurreccion also attended the WCSJ held in Seoul, South Korea, in 2025, where she was a speaker in one of the lectures. Representing, PSciJourn, she attended the WFSJ’s General Assembly at the end of the WCSJ.

Shaira Panela also attended the WCSJ in Seoul being a WFSJ SjCOOP-Asia mentee.

SciCommPh’s very own VP for External Affairs and PRO Timothy James Dimacali was also at the WCSJ for having joined one of the Conference’s training projects for science journalists.

Framelia Anonas, then with the Department of Science and Technology’s Science and Technology Information Institute, participated in the Conference as a travel scholar.

The WFSJ holds the World Conference of Science Journalists every two years. In 2025 it will be held in Pretoria, South Africa, with the theme, “Science Journalism and Social Justice – our role in promoting resilience.” The 2023 WCSJ was in Medellin, Colombia.
